Food is the Best Medicine

“Food is the best medicine. The best medicine is food.” Hippocrates

Because the next few months are considered flu season, I decided that it would be a great idea to formulate a “Wellness Plan for my family.” By this I mean, getting 8 hours of sleep each night, limiting our sugar intake and eating the right foods to stay strong and healthy through the fall and winter. My acupuncturists, Dr. Mao and Dr. Dao gave me a list of super healthy foods that have wonderful healing properties and I want to share some of them with you. Anyone have some great recipe ideas that incorporate one or more of these foods? Let us know and bon appetite!!

So true! I’ve been experimenting with veggie soups, too. It’s a great way to get all the healthy foods you need and stay warm!

    Cabbage, kale, Peas.

Be a bit more careful with herbs/spices. Most of them also have medicinal properties.

Examples: Licorice root raises blood pressure or Ginger treats a queasy stomach.

As well as problems with foods and medicines.

    Example: Grapefruit disables asthma medicines.

At the end of 2004 I was terribly ill. I spent the first half of 2005 at hospitals, with doctors, getting tests and on medications. It really didn’t help. After a while, on a whim, I started tracking what I ate and then discovered that some of the vitamins I wasn’t getting were directly tied to the health issues I was having. I then starting eating/preparing meals/creating recipes based on the vitamins and minerals I was missing on any given day. Now I have an entire book of power foods, vitamins, minerals and more with lists of which foods have which vitamins and minerals and update a website daily (www.fitday.com) with what I eat and do a one week rolling nutrition report daily and eat for which ever vitamin/mineral/health issue I am most concerned about that day. I have never been healthier.

Ditto to honey, especially raw local honey. :) Also wonderful for allergy symptoms.

We enjoy quinoa over here. Another is barley cooked in chicken broth (as opposed to water). It makes a nice flavor, offering a great side. We love Crockpot Applesauce Chicken over the barley. (the recipes uses garlic and cinnamon, 2 wonderful immune-boosting things!)
